Duplication Vs. Replication: There are two methods for creating CDs; but which method is best for your job? Generally, Replication is used for large runs of CDs and DVDs, and involves manufacturing CD/DVD-ROMs. Duplication is useful for smaller runs or in situations where a faster turnaround time is needed, and is accomplished through burning blank CD/DVD-Rs. If you have any questions, we're more than happy to suggest the best method to fit your needs. Replication Replication is the act of manufacturing duplicate CDs or DVDs from a master source. First your electronic data is mastered on to glass, which in turn is used to make a metal stamper for the injection molding machine. Each disc has it's own master stamper, and each is tested bit-by-bit against the original for accuracy. Each stamped replicate then goes through multiple stages of coating to protect the substrate. This process produces mass runs of durable CD-ROMs or DVDs and is ideal for larger jobs. Duplication Duplication records onto a CD-R or recordable DVD, like burning media on your computer, except on an industrial scale by machines made specifically for that purpose. Rather than creating physical indentations, CD-Rs and DVD-Rs have a layer of photosensitive dye which is turned opaque by the burning laser. Discs burned through Duplication have a shelf life of about 20-30 years before the dye starts to fade. Duplication has a faster turnaround time and is more cost-effective for smaller runs. This is ideal for large archival storage projects, convention demos, or promotional deals. Other Options Custom shapes Need that extra edge when handing out your CD? How about putting it on a mini-disc, business card disc, or a custom shape? CD-Roms can be manufactured and printed all all sorts of shapes and sizes to make them stand out.
